SOLY CISSÉ, EXHIBITION : ÉCOSYSTÈMES

Dans un monde où les dieux anciens se sont réveillés, les grands Écosystèmes de Soly Cissé se peuplent d’humains et non-humains, animaux, plantes, génies et esprits, ancêtres et fantômes. Unis par d’invisibles interdépendances, ils façonnent  les relations entre les humains et leur milieu naturel, à l’exemple du village de chasseurs où l’artiste a vécu, un temps en pleine forêt, près du fleuve Bafing où son père, médecin radiologue était affecté  à la surveillance médicale des ouvriers qui construisaient le barrage de Manantali (un grand barrage hydroélectrique au Mali).

Les figures énigmatiques de la série Le Monde Perdu émergent, parfois des profondeurs de la toile, telles des présences intemporelles, portant en elles les échos des luttes passées, présentes et à venir. Elles interrogent la condition humaine et se fondent dans la composition globale des Écosystèmes qui révèlent, à la manière des anthropologues, l’imbrication de toute formes de vie, visibles et invisibles.

Cissé plonge aux sources des approches cosmogoniques ancestrales, pour travailler les violences de l’histoire qui dérégulent nos sociétés, nous égarent et saisir le scintillement délicat du monde marin, la fugacité élégante d’un animal avant qu’il ne soit trop tard. Ainsi, la beauté du poisson devenu relique et les scènes burlesques nous invitent à traverser la nuit, par la surcharge électrique qu’ils dégagent, aussi les mondes lointains qu’ils charrient.

A longstanding Western tradition saw nature as inferior to other subjects such as history, mythology, religion… The hierarchy of genres, which was theorised in the 17th century by Andre Felibien— moulded the minds curators to the point that very little space was made available to Nature. Today, in a context of rapidly changing, environment has at last become a newsworthy, and politically charged.

Marion Chauvy presents Ecosystems, a major new solo exhibition by Soly Cissé. This exhibition showcases a selection of large-scale paintings that delve into a theme central to Cissé’s oeuvre: Nature, interwoven with the environment and the animal condition, reflecting the complex interplay of existence in its myriad forms

In a world where ancient gods have awakened, humans and non-humans, animals, plants, spirits of the land, ancestors, and ghosts inhabit the vast Ecosystems of Soly Cissé. Bound by invisible interdependencies, they shape the tangible relationship to the earth of the hunter societies among which the artist lived near the Bafing River, deep in the forest—where his father had been assigned as radiologist to monitor the health of workers on the Manantali dam then under construction.

Recently, the enigmatic figures of his series The Lost World emerge from the depths of the canvas, like timeless presences, carrying the echoes of past, present, and future struggles. These works question the human condition while revealing, in the manner of anthropologists, the intricate entanglement of all forms of life, both visible and invisible.

Cissé delves into the sources of ancient cosmogonic approaches to address the violences of history that destabilize our societies and lead us astray, capturing the delicate sparkle of the marine world and the elegant fleetingness of an animal before it is too late. Thus, the beauty of the fish that has become a relic and the burlesque scenes invite us to go through the night, by the electric overload they emit, and the distant worlds they carry along.
